In 1995, Toho
decided that they wanted to kill off their famous hero for good.
Toho, in 1995, launched its "final" Godzilla film,
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. For this movie, Toho created
a very special suit for Godzilla's death. In the beginning of
the movie, Godzilla absorbs too much radioactivity and is slowly
melting. Godzilla's eyes are red, burning orange spots glow,
and steam rapidally rises, clearly showing his slow, agonizing
death.
On the front
of the poster for Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Godzilla is
shown in his suffering ,with the quote "Godzilla dies"
labeled in front of him. Whoever walked into the movie theater
at that time knew that this would be the final Godzilla movie
forever. In the movie, Godzilla, along with death waiting for
him, comes his original foe: the Oxygen Destroyer, in monster
form. In the end of the movie, after destroyer is destroyed (no
pun intended), Godzilla melts. Godzilla is gone forever.
In 1998, TriStar
launched its own remake of Godzilla, but it had miserably failed
(as you can all recall). Japanese fans demmanded Toho to give
them their Godzilla back. In 1999, Toho created Godzilla 2000:
Millennium. Godzilla has been born again.
