Godzilla Suit History: 1973-1975

Big Suit

CloseupThe suit used in what can be considered the lowest point in Godzilla's career. By this time, it became apparent that Godzilla was not the dark symbol from the original movie anymore. He became a hero for children. Thanks for the use of lighter materials, this Godzilla suit weighed only 88 pounds (40 kg), a major change compared to the original Godzilla suit, which weighed 220 pounds (100 kg). The suit was first used in Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973). It conisted of a typical children's movie plot, where Godzilla and a sidekick, Jet-Jaguar, fight two evil enemies, Megalon and Gigan, that want to take over the Earth. On this suit, the center dorsal fins remained about the same size as the last suit; while the side dorsal fins became barely visible. His eyes were enlarged, possibly so Godzilla has the "friendly hero" look. This suit design was slightly modified for Godzilla's 30th anniversary in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Godzilla's face had a more serious look to it, and the dorsal fins had a silvery gloss to it. This was the last Godzilla suit used in the original (Showa) Godzilla series. Godzilla would not be seen in nine years, in Japan. The suit used in his revival, Gojira (1984), would show a major change in the perception of Godzilla in his movies from that year on.
