Possibly the most famous kaiju, besides Godzilla, in the Godzilla series. Mothra originally appeared in the 1961 film Mothra. Mothra is the monster of peace. She is a goddess worshipped by the natives of Infant Island. Mothra is guided by two small twin faries, known as the "Shojobin," and "Cosmos" (who are very annoying and should be stomped by Godzilla in my opinion) that sing to her whenever the people need help. When Mothra was introduced into the Godzilla series, she (Godzilla fans refer to Mothra as a female) had to be scaled down in size to match Godzilla. In Mothra's original movie, she was 60 meters (197 feet) in length, had a 250 meter (820 feet) wingspan, and weighed 22,000 tons.

In Godzilla vs. Mothra, the adult Mothra laid an egg that washed on the shore of Japan during a hurricane. When Godzilla tried to attack the egg, the adult Mothra fought back, though old and weak. Godzilla eventually killed the adult Mothra from his bad breath. The egg hatched and two Mothra catepillars appeared, and immedietely began to look for Godzilla. The two larvae defeated Godzilla by wrapping him up in a cacoon. Mothra appeared again in the next film, Ghidrah, the Three Headed Monster, but in this movie, there was only one larva and not two. In Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Mothra appeared as the adult moth, but two years later, in Destroy All Monsters, Mothra was changed back to a catepillar.

Mothra's next appearance wasn't until 1992, in the Heisei series. In the new Godzilla vs. Mothra, Mothra had an evil twin named Battra, also known as the "Black Mothra." The Earth created these two monsters (the Earth is considered "living" in this movie), when the environment was being threatened by ancient humans. Though both protectors of the Earth, Mothra and Battra didn't like each other, and had a big fight. Mothra eventually won, and had laid an egg that stayed underground for several thousand years. In 1992, a meteorite fell to Earth, and created a hurricane that uncovered the egg. The egg later hatched, and at the same time, Battra appeared again. Though archenemies, the two monsters decided to join sides, so they could defeat Godzilla. Battra died during the final battle, but Godzilla was soundly defeated, until the next movie, of course.

In 2001, director Shusuke Kaneko decided to bring Mothra back in the upcoming movie Godzilla-Mothra-King Ghidorah: Daikaiju Soukougeki. Kaneko gave Mothra a facelift (see picture above), by giving Mothra a wasp-like appearance. Mothra also sports a stinger, but it is yet unknown whether Mothra will actually use it against Godzilla. Mothra will still be considered a protector of the Earth, but fortunately, the annoying singing twin faries will not appear in this movie.
