Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

4 1/2 Tohos

Plot: WARNING!: I Tell the Endings!

Birth Island has disappeared. Godzilla shows up in Hong Kong with many different patches of red all over him. He has absorbed too much radiation after the island exploded. The G-Force notices this and later find out that he will soon explode and destroy the whole Earth! G-Force has no idea what to do. They recruit Kenichi Yamane, the grandson of Dr. Yamane from the original movie, to help them figure out what to do with Godzilla.

Meanwhile in Tokyo, many strange events have been occurring. In a soil sample of that area, it is learned that there is no oxygen inside of it, and that the original Godzilla was killed in that area with the oxygen destroyer 40 years before. Later on, small creatures are discovered inside the sample, and some of them manage to escape. They destroy a whole public aquarium and they seem to be growing larger. The creatures then grow larger than a man and are noticed inside of a building. Military men try to kill the creatures, but they all fail. Some of them escape into the city.

Later on, Godzilla shows up near a nuclear power plant. G-Force launches the Super-X III to try and stop him. This Super-X III, unlike the previous two, contain what's called "freezer weapons." Godzilla's radiation is soon brought under control, and G-Force believes that Godzilla will not explode. After many hours, Godzilla unfreezes, and starts to head towards the Bering Sea. G-Force is then informed that Godzilla's radiation is out of control again, but instead of Godzilla exploding, he will melt down (and destroy the earth too). Kenichi Yamane calculates that Godzilla will melt down at 1200 degrees Celsius. Miki Saegusa, while in her chopper, discovers a larger version of Little Godzilla along a beach (in this movie, he's called "Godzilla Junior.") G-Force finds out later that Godzilla is following Godzilla Junior's path.

More of the strange creatures have been spotted. The military developed more freezer weapons as a counter defense against them. While it seems the military are winning against the creatures, they form into one giant monster. The creature is later named Destoroyah (pronounced: "Destroyer"). Kenichi Yamane suggests that to avoid Godzilla's meltdown, he and Destoroyah must fight each other. Godzilla Junior is used as a decoy, which Miki is totally disgusted with, to lead Godzilla to Destoroyah in Tokyo.

Godzilla Junior arrives, and fights with Destoroyah for a while. When Destoroyah is about to kill him, Godzilla Junior uses his fire breath to blow him up. Godzilla arrives in Tokyo Bay, and meets with Godzilla Junior. When all seems well. an adult Destoroyah is formed! He picks up Godzilla Junior by the neck, and kills him by dropping him on top of a building near the bay. Godzilla gets up and fights with Destoroyah for a while. Eventually, he manages to blow Destoroyah up. He walks to his son and tries to revive him by giving him a little radiation, but he fails. Destoroyah forms again, and Godzilla's temperature is getting close to 1200. Godzilla's heat beam gets to become very strong, and Destoroyah tries to retreat. The military, and the Super-X III kill Destoroyah with freezer weapons. Then, Godzilla's temperature reaches 1200. The military and Super-X III try to keep Godzilla alive with their freezer weapons. They shoot at maximum power, but it just doesn't seem to work. Godzilla lets out one last growl, and melts down to his death. After Godzilla dies, a brand new Godzilla is seen across the horizon. Godzilla Junior absorbed his father's radiation, and grew into a full adult with it. He lets out a roar, and according to Toho during that time, was the end of Godzilla forever. :-(

This movie was a bit of a tear jerker. It was supposed to be the last Godzilla movie Toho was going to make forever. Of course now we know it isn't because of Toho's new Godzilla movies Godzilla 2000: Millennium, and Godzilla X Megaguirus. Godzilla's foe, Destoroyah, is actually the Oxygen Destroyer in monster form, you might as well say. Toho actually gets you to absolutely hate Destoroyah. To me, Destoroyah is the Godzilla foe I hate the most (Oh, I'm sorry, hate it a strong word). At the end of the movie when you see Godzilla melt down, you can't help but stand still, drop your mouth open, and just stare. Every single time I watch this movie, I do the same exact thing over and over again. I even did it when I was video capturing these pictures! When I showed this movie to my 7 year old cousin, he said to me afterwards "That was sad..." Godzilla's fire breath, I have to say, is the coolest one I've ever seen. When you first see it, you go "woah." My copy of the movie is dubbed in English, and yes, the dubbing is still a bit cheesy, but much of an improvement over the last movie, Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla. Like I said in my review of Godzilla, King of the Monsters, this movie is a definite must have. Let's just say that it's the last Japanese Godzilla, before the Tri-Star Godzilla. If you're an absolute die-hard Godzilla fan who doesn't have this movie yet, buy the subtitled version, unless you understand Japanese very well. I'd surely appreciate this movie more if I had the subtitled version.

Photos above (and below) are from my own DVD capture. More coming soon!
