Godzilla Suit History: 1999 - 2001

New Suit

Godzilla's radical new appearance for the new century. Godzilla's overall apperance is lean, and more mean. Godzilla's scales on this suit are much more detailed. His dorsal fins are larger, more jagged than previous suits, and has rose tint to it. His head shape is thinner, making him look more like a reptile than the cat-like look of the Heisei Series. His tongue and teeth are also longer. His eyes are white with black pupils, much like the eyes used on the Godzilla 1984 suit.

This suit is the first Godzilla suit to be green. In the past, Godzilla has been stereotyped as being green, when he actually was a charcoal gray. Toho had decided to make this Godzilla green, to make that sterotype official! :-)

This suit was first used in Godzilla 2000: Millennium. After many Japanese fans were disapointed in the TriStar remake, they begged Toho to bring their own Godzilla back. Toho had thought of many new radical designs for Godzilla, but none of them didn't seem to preserve the original Godzilla look. The question now was: "What makes Godzilla, Godzilla?" Toho then came to the final design, which is the current suit you see. Godzilla's design may have been new, but it still had everything all of the previous Godzillas had: walking on two feet with a tail dragging behind, big dorsal fins (in this case, very big!!!), the arms and four fingers hanging down, and the little tiny ears that are located just by the eyes. The newely updated design was perfect! The suit was last used in Godzilla X Megaguirus, the "sequel" (it wasn't a direct sequel) to Godzilla 2000: Millennium. After Godzilla X Megaguirus, Shusuke Kaneko became director for the upcoming Godzilla flick Godzilla-Mothra-King Ghidorah: Battle on Fire. Kaneko dropped the suit design and decided to redesign the 21st century Godzilla.
